NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Displaying a fake gun in a threatening manner would be against the law under a proposal moving through the Legislature.

The bill sponsored by Sen. Mark Norris, a Collierville Republican, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

The legislation defines a fake weapon as any object or device similar in coloration and appearance to a firearm, such as a BB gun or toy gun.

The companion bill remains in a House subcommittee.
