Radar detectors hit speed bump

NASHVILLE -- Sellers of radar detectors will be prohibited from offering to pay or paying the speeding citations of motorists who use their products in Tennessee under a bill that won state House approval Monday night.

State Rep. Curry Todd, R-Collierville, a retired Memphis police officer, said radar detection manufacturers and marketers who make such offers "are encouraging people to break the law." He and Sen. Mark Norris, R-Collierville, are sponsoring the legislation that would fine companies that make the offers up to $500.

The bill, which won House approval on a 79-11 vote, is set for review in the Senate Judiciary Committee this week.
